Backlink:

A backlink is any hyperlink on a website that points back to another website. When one page on the internet mentions another page and includes a link viewers can click on to get to it, they have created a backlink. This can also be called an "incoming" or "inbound" link.

Backlinks can be a form of citation. If someone mentions you or your product, they may want to refer their viewers to your website. Having a lot of backlinks is a good thing, so many people want to find ways to keep getting them.

This is because backlinks hold great significance when dealing with search engine optimization (SEO). The number of backlinks a page has is correlated to how popular or important the page is. If a page has a lot of backlinks to it, it shows that the page is regarded highly on the web.

This doesn’t mean you can create unnecessary backlinks in order to rank higher. In fact, part of Google’s algorithm penalizes sites that create spammy links in order to cheat the system. This is called Google Penguin.

A few companies have found better ways to build backlinks with quality information behind them. Some examples include:

  • guest posting and blogging
  • local citations
  • news articles
  • directories
  • press releases
  • social media
  • blog/forum comments and profiles
