Top level domains (TLD) are essentially the extension, or end part, of your website. The purpose of top level domains is to help users find your website.

Examples of top level domains include:

  • .com
  • .org
  • .net
  • .gov
  • .edu

Based on what entity the website is for, the top level domain can differ.

For example, generic websites have TLDs like “.com”. However, sponsored TLDs can be “.edu” or “.gov” because they represent accredited institutions.
